FAQ

COPYWRITING COURSES FAQS

Do I get support or personal mentoring?

Yes, the course includes 2 x 45-minute coaching calls with the Copywriting Coach, Bernadette Schwerdt. These calls can be conducted via Skype or phone. Bernadette tailors each call to your specific needs. All topics can be covered, from setting up your business, getting feedback on your work, reviewing your quotes, helping you find clients, building your website etc. Whatever you need, Bernadette can help you with it.

Is there a time limit by when the calls must be used?

No. There is no ‘statute of limitations’ with your calls. You are welcome to schedule them with Bernadette when they suit you. We do recommend scheduling a call with Bernadette within 30 days of enrolment so that she can help you set some specific goals and strategies that will help you get your business up and running quickly.

Experience tells us that those who schedule a coaching call in the early stages of the course do well.

Does Bernadette use the 45-minute session to read and review the work or is the time fully dedicated to feedback?

Bernadette prepares her feedback in advance of your call. She won’t use your time together to read through the work. She knows the coaching calls are a big part of why people choose the course and she makes herself totally available to her students during the time they have with her.

How can I send my assignments to Bernadette for feedback?

You can send it in a Word document and email it to her.

45 minutes for each call doesn't seem like a lot of time. Will I have time to cover everything?

Bernadette works fast and has coached hundreds of students. She knows the answers to most questions and has seen the same issues come up over the years. Believe it or not, most students run out of questions before their time is up so she encourages you to compile as many questions as possible before the call.

If I complete the Deluxe package, how many Coaching Calls are included?

There are 2 Coaching Calls included in the Deluxe Pack. Additional Coaching Calls can be purchased.

How do I set up a coaching call?

To get your coaching calls underway, you simply email Bernadette (info@copyschool.com) or phone her on 0419 891 932 and you can set a date that’s convenient.

We can either Skype or just speak on the phone. Bernadette needs about 7-10 days’ notice for coaching calls.

How will I get access to the course?

Upon enrolment, you will receive an email from us with a log-in code. This is your unique code so please keep it safe and don’t share it with others (please).

You’ll receive a link to the Members Page and by putting in your log in code, you’ll gain instant access to the virtual classroom.

How can I enrol?

You can enrol online using our secure pay system and pay via PayPal.

What's the best way to start the course?

Please listen to the “How to get the most from this course” audio file. It’s really important you listen to this as it will help you navigate the course and give you clear instructions on how to set up your coaching calls, how to complete the assignments and much more. From there, you can read the course notes, watch the video webinars or just pick a topic of interest to you and jump in!

If I enrol in all three courses, what's the best way to get started?

We recommend that you work your way through the ‘Learn How To Write’ course and then the ‘Get Paid To Write’ course. This will give you a really strong foundation in the copywriting process and the business of copywriting and will help you find the niche or areas of interest for you.

Once they’re done, we then recommend you do the SEO course. You’ll get the most from this course if you have a solid grounding in the copywriting process.

How is it different to the Australian Writers Centre (AWC) Copywriting Course?

Bernadette is the creator and tutor of the AWC course and the School of Copywriting course so she is fully conversant with how the courses differ.

The key differences between them are:

  • a) Personalised coaching and mentoring:

The School of Copywriting course provides detailed, personalised, one to one feedback with each student. These mentoring sessions take place via phone or Skype and are pivotal in helping students take their copywriting skills to the next level. These sessions are invaluable for those who want to quickly progress their copywriting career and want detailed feedback that meets their unique needs.

Few online courses offer this level of customised support with the creator the course and Bernadette leaves nothing on the table – she will open up her contact book for you, assist in connecting you to whoever you need and will provide you with whatever assistance you need to get started.

  • b) Extra written material and chapters:

When you enrol in the School of Copywriting course, you’ll receive all the same videos, slide decks etc. you’d get in the AWC course, but you’ll also receive a comprehensive series of printable eBooks, workbooks, assignments, checklists and templates that are not available in the AWC course.

Videos are great learning resources but if you are seeking a more comprehensive understanding of copywriting, you will value the extra instruction and detail these printable resources provide.

  • c) instantly accessible:

We know you want to start learning as quickly as possible which is why we have made this course instantly available. Enrol now and you’ll have it within minutes. You can also get feedback on your work at any time, not just during a set period.

  • d) This course is self-paced:

You know what you want to learn so we make all the content available at one time. It is available 24/7 and instantly downloadable. It contains both workbooks (incorporating assessment tasks) and webinar videos taking you through the detail of exactly how to write and set up a freelance copywriting business.

We also provide you with a learning guide on how to get the most from the course but you can start wherever you want.

We provide you with a learning guide on how to get the most from the course but you can start wherever you want.

Do I get feedback in the AWC course too?

Yes, but it is part of a group feedback session and the feedback is strictly related to the assignment for that week. If you don’t submit material for that week, your opportunity to receive feedback expires. If you are seeking specific feedback related to your own copywriting work and access to Bernadette’s broad range of suppliers, contacts and work experience networks, then the Australian School of Copywriting would be the most suitable course for you.

How long does it take to get through?

Each course takes around 20 hours to complete. This is based on you spending around 1 hour per module and ½ hour on an assignment per module.

Our recommendation would be to work your way through the course for a few weeks, note down as many questions as you can and then schedule a call with Bernadette, the Copywriting Coach. That way, you can get the most from the coaching session.

Does each module have structured exercises, questions or homework?

Yes. Each module has assignments attached to it so you can either work on those and submit your work for feedback or you can work on your own material e.g. website, blog, brochure etc. and Bernadette can provide feedback on that. The assignments are not compulsory. They are for you to put the copywriting theories into practice and have a go at creating some copy.

How long will I get access to the materials for?

They are yours for life. We recommend you download them and save them so that you can retain them for the duration of your copywriting career.

Are the courses accredited?

No. And that’s a good thing. The copywriting industry is one of the few industries that does not have a formal accreditation body recognised by Australian training authorities, such as OTTE.

Why is this a good thing? Because it means that employment is given to copywriters based on their experience and the quality of work in their portfolio, not on whether they can pass an exam or not. What could be fairer than that?

There’s an old saying ‘you’re only as good as your last ad’. It might be a cliché but it’s true.

You will be employed as a copywriter because you create great ads, not because you have a degree in marketing or a Masters in Creative Writing or any other topic.

In fact, copywriting is one of the few professions where a degree is not required. That’s refreshing because it means that anyone can become a copywriter, irrespective of their age, experience, background and educational history (or lack of it).

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes. You will also be given the chance to be listed on our upcoming website. This will enable you to promote your copywriting business or bid for work that might be occurring. This is just one of the services you can access when you have completed the course.

Will you help me get work experience and build my confidence?

Yes, this is one of the strengths of our school. Upon enrolment, you are invited to join the Copywriting Club – this enables you to connect with clients who are seeking copywriting students for work experience. This service helps you develop your portfolio, build your confidence and understand what it’s like to work in a real-life scenario with clients.

Can Bernadette help me set up my freelance copywriting business?

One of the advantages of having Bernadette as your mentor is that she has been working as a freelance copywriter for over 25 years and knows exactly what it takes to be successful. As such, you will gain direct advice on what to do, what not do and how to avoid mistakes. One call with Bernadette could save you months, maybe years of trial and error. She will also open her contact book to assist you. If you need access to specific suppliers, contacts or people who can help you, she will do her utmost to connect you with those people.

What are my prospects like for getting work after the course?

The market for copywriters is vast, more so now than ever before. Every business, small and large, has to promote itself. And all sorts of organisations need copywriters – from hospitals and charities to football clubs and theatre companies. There’s room for newcomers too because the industry is constantly changing. Companies have to compete with other products which means their advertising has to change as well. The opportunities are infinite. There’s thousands of small-medium sized businesses that can’t afford to hire an ad agency, yet they too need to create websites, brochures, newspaper ads, radio ads and newsletters.

Is this course just for copywriters or can other freelancers benefit from it?

This course has been written with freelance copywriters in mind, but the course is very suitable for anyone in a freelance business or indeed anyone who would like to learn how to market their own business.

This course has been written with freelance copywriters in mind, but the course is very suitable for anyone in a freelance business or indeed anyone who would like to learn how to market their own business. Graphic designers, business coaches, small business owners, photographers, novelists, musicians, artists – anyone who needs to promote themselves and their business will benefit greatly from this course.

Do I need any qualifications or experience to do the course?

No. The course is open to everyone and there are no pre-requisites. The course is great for those with no experience in copywriting at all as we teach you everything you need to get started and to get out there earning money. It’s also very useful for those who need to write brochures or advertisements for their employer or for those business owners who don’t want to hire an expensive advertising agency to do their copywriting.

What if I don’t like it or it’s not what I thought? Can I get my money back?

Yes, we offer a 30-day money back guarantee. If you don’t like it or think it’s not for you, we will refund your money in full, no questions asked.

I live outside of Australia. Can I still do the course?

Yes. You can live anywhere in the world and do this course. The course is suitable for any English-speaking person. The examples we use are primarily Australian but they are universal in theme and content and will make sense no matter what country you live in. We welcome applicants from all over the world. You will receive the same level of feedback and attention as those who live in Australia. Please note that GST is included in the price so regardless of your location, the cost remains the same.

English is not my first language. Is that a problem?

No, it’s an asset. Obviously, if you hope to work in Australia, you’ll need a working knowledge of English, but as long as you can communicate your ideas in the written form, it doesn’t matter what language you speak.

For students looking to return to their home countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Europe or the USA, you’ll find that what you learn in the course is immediately transferable to your home country. The beauty of advertising is that the principles are universal. It doesn’t matter what country you come from, the basis of advertising is the same, give or take a few cultural issues.

In fact, many advertising agencies in South East Asia seek copywriters from Australia because of our reputation for producing exceptional copywriters. If you can get some experience here and create a professional portfolio you may find that getting copywriting work when you return home is easier than you think.

What’s more, if you can speak another language, you may be able to get work with ethnic newspapers and translating companies. These organisations take an advertisement written in English and translate the concept into another language. This is highly specialised work and the demand is high for skilled copywriters who speak other languages.
